The city developed as a major center of tobacco and textile manufacturing and banking, associated with companies including the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Hanes, and Wachovia.[1][2] Its economy later diversified, with health care, education, research, manufacturing, and other services becoming major sectors.[12][13]
The city is home to higher-education institutions such as Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Salem College, and Forsyth Technical Community College. Its historic sites, museums, and cultural events include Old Salem, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, NCMA Winston-Salem, and the National Black Theatre Festival.
